The mermaid is life-size, on a bathroom floor measuring 8ft. by 6ft. [2.5m.x 2m.]
The sloping ceiling prevents a fully vertical picture.

Commissions like this require a purpose-built composition table, and sufficient handpainted tiles must be glazed and fired to ensure coherent colours throughout.

The mosaic design was composed in the studio, then fixed under strong paper. This allows the design to be cut into sections, for ease of transport to the site. These were re-joined, like a jigsaw-puzzle, and the classic 'Greek' wave-pattern border was the final element to be laid.

Ladders were also needed to get sufficient distance for proportion and balance of elements.

Great care is taken at the adhesion stage to produce a surface that is smooth and even underfoot.
